about us

L.E.S. was co-founded by industry veterans, Nicolas Gerst Ph.D., and Clayton McSheridan. Currently, Nicolas is the co-founder and director of operations for L.E.S. while Clayton is the company's co-founder and calibration specialist.

Nicolas Gerst Ph.D.

For over 20 years, Nicolas was a lab researcher who also oversaw pipette calibration. While in this position, he often experienced issues when it came time to calibrate the lab's pipettes.  Usually, they were shipped to the manufacturer.  Even though they did an excellent job, this was not convenient for the lab.  The staff had to be without pipettes for a few days if not the entire week. To help resolve this issue, Nicolas often organized bathes so his colleagues had a few pipettes to share. Since each shipment contained over $10,000 worth of pipette, the package had to be insured, adding significant cost to the calibration of the equipment.

Dr. Gerst knew there had to be a more convenient and economical way to calibrate pipettes, which led him to founding, Laboratory Equipment Services.  Calibration and other services are provided onsite by skilled and experienced technicians. L.E.S. performs services onsite during convenient times to ensure minimal disruption in your lab.

Nicolas has a Ph.D in Pharmacology from the University of Strasbourg, France.

Clayton McSheridan

Prior to launching L.E.S. Clayton was involved in quality control for automotive and medical devices. For 10 years, Mr. McSheridan gained valuable experience, becoming an expert in the calibration and maintenance of lab instruments. First, he worked with pipettes and expanded to analytical balances and compound microscopes.

Clayton always favored onsite calibration because he felt it provided the best customer experience. With that being said, he developed a comprehensive calibration kits with the proper tools and consumables for most brands of pipettes. And we at L.E.S. expanded it further with a top-of-the-line analytical balance and the highest class of calibrated weights, which are calibrated regularly (traceable to NIST) to deliver the best experience for our clients

Balance calibration.jpg
  • Do you calibrate all the channels on a multi-channels pipette?
No, we calibrate one channel and check all the other channels. We check all the other channels because sometimes the measurements are increasingly off as you checks towards the other side. We then re-adjust the calibration to find the best compromise where all the channels are within the range (manufacurer or ISO).
  • I have some old pipettes. Will you charge me if you cannot calibrate them?
No. We only charge for the pipettes that pass calibration.
  • Can you calibrate my balance even if the auto-cal no longer works?
Some balances have an internal weight that is use during auto-cal or internal calibration. Usualy, we can change the menu to external calibration and use our set of calibrated weights to calibrate the balance.
  • Can you repair the frozen fine and coarse focus on older microscopes?
First, we would have to examine the microscope to determine if we can repair it. We would have to look at it. Our skilled technicians can repair many models. However, often, the issue is caused by old grease that solidified and act similar to glue. Recently, we disassembled older Stereomasters and AlfaPhot models, cleaned up the old grease, re-lubricated the gears and re-assembled them. Now the clients are very happy with the performance of these older microscopes
